GULFPORT, FL: Gulfport, Florida is one of six small-town finalists from across the country in the first ever Rand McNally/USA Today Best of the Road” competition in the “Best for Food” category. To celebrate Gulfport’s ranking as a finalist and to prepare for an upcoming “Road Rally” visit in which the town will be judged. 15 participating Gulfport restaurants have crafted a special “Best of the Road Sampler Plate.” Each plate will offer taste-sized samples of that restaurant’s best or signature dishes. Most plates will be priced in the range of $10 to $15. Plates at each of the 15 locations will be offered beginning Thursday, June 23rd and will remain on menus at least through Saturday, July 23rd.

Gulfport restaurants offering their own Best of the Road Sampler Plate” include: Backfin Blue Café, Habana Café, Isabelle’s at Peninsula Inn & Spa, Island Flavors and ‘Tings, La Cote Basque Winehouse, O’Maddy’s Bar and Grille, Peg’s Cantina & Brew Pub, Neptune Grill, Pia’s Trattoria, Smokin’ J’s BBQ, Stella’s Deli, T & Me Tea Co., Tangelo’s Grille, Village Pub and Yummy’s Casual Café.

Gulfport Restaurants Offer Signature Tastes for National Competition

Small towns were nominated in an online public forum beginning in May, with open voting for towns in the “Best for Food” and four other categories: “Most Beautiful,” “Most Patriotic,” “Friendliest,” and “Most Fun.” Gulfport received the highest number of votes in its “Best for Food” category during public voting. Other small town “Best for Food” finalists are: Addison, WV; Burnsville, MN; Lafayette, LA; Costa Mesa and Visalia, CA.

The “Road Rally” portion of the competition kicks off with an event on June 23rd in New York City. Online public voting was also a factor in selecting the five two-person teams which will participate in the Rally. At the June 23rd event, teams will be notified which category they will be assigned to judge in the competition. Teams will have the discretion to determine their own routes and itineraries. Organizers for Gulfport’s “Best for Food” host committee determined the sample plates would be a good idea to have in place on local menus prior to the team’s arrival. After it is notified of an arrival date for the Rally team, the host committee plans a public event to welcome the team to the City, as well as a festive “restaurant stroll” in which the team and the public will be invited to partake.

The Road Rally continues across the country as teams visit their assigned small towns and observe and judge each. Teams are asked to blog, tweet and otherwise document their experiences as they travel. A final ceremony in Los Angeles will welcome teams on July 15th, at which time they will announce their own choices for best small towns in each category.

For those who want to know updated information, a Facebook event page is online at https://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=105170429576190 or you can search on Facebook for “Gulfport’s Best of The Road Food Rally!” Up to date details will be posted there as they are known. Every Dog Has His Day…in Gulfport: Get Rescued, the animal rescue festival and fundraiser

Gulfport’s Get Rescued, the animal rescue festival and fundraiser, is preparing for its seventh annual event to take place on Saturday, February 26th, 2011 from 10AM to 5PM. Animal rescue organizations, many appearing with adoptable pets, take over Beach Blvd. to raise money and awareness for their causes. Additionally, animal-related vendors, artists and crafters offer their wares to festival-goers. Each year, hundreds of attendees, many accompanied by their own canine companions, make their way to Gulfport to participate in what has become a beloved tradition. Pet Related activities include Agility contests, a pet and their people dance contest, training demos and more.

Participants are encouraged to bring donations of dog and cat food and cat litter to be distributed to the rescues. This popular event, which GMA helps to sponsor, has evolved from one block and a handful of animal rescue groups in its first year to a popular and beloved event representing over 60 animal rescue groups from throughout the region. It is one of the largest such events in the nation. All proceeds from vendor fees and sponsors benefit participating non-profit rescue groups.

One component which continues this year is a Get Rescued Celebration held later in the evening after the daytime event. This year, the Celebration will be held at the Gulfport Casino from 7 to 11PM.  Festivities will include music and dancing, cash bar, hors d’oeuvres, opportunity drawings and silent auctions with a wide variety of items provided by Gulfport merchants and supporters of the individual rescues. $20 tickets for the Celebration will be available in advance at The Outpost, Reef Dog or Domain Home Accessories, or tickets can be purchased at the door.

Supporters can become involved in Get Rescued by sponsoring an individual animal rescue group for $50, which will include a prominent sign at that group’s Beach Blvd. booth. Additionally, donations of merchandise or gift certificates for the silent auction and drawings will be appreciated. Get Rescued is proudly sponsored/co-sponsored by the City of Gulfport, The Gulfport Merchants Association, Pet Angel and more. The daytime event is FREE for the public to attend.

Holiday Hoopla!, Gulfport

GULFPORT, FL—Don’t get your Tinsel in a Tangle! It’s time to get your holiday cheer in gear! Feeling Scrooge-y? A fun-filled festival will do the trick. The Gulfport Merchants association presents the 2nd annual Holiday Hoopla! Holiday Hoopla is sponsored by Bright House Networks, Tampa Tribune, the City of Gulfport and The Gulfport Chamber of Commerce. A portion of the proceeds from the event on December 11th will benefit Operation Santa, The Gulfport Senior Center Foundation, and Gulfport’s Get Rescued.

Holiday Hoopla is a celebration of arts, crafts, foods, live music and roving holiday characters set in a waterfront atmosphere amid bright, twinkling, colorful lights, and Santa & Mrs. Claus. Stroll the decorated streets filled with up to 200 talented exhibitors and unique shops. The festival will provide shoppers with one-of-a-kind gifts that cannot be found anywhere else, and all of your holiday shopping can be done in one place!

Visitors will be enchanted by a variety of festive and fun holiday-themed music, holiday carolers, dance performances, and roving street performers. Many types of entertainment will perform during the Hoopla, from local school bands & Choral groups and local musicians to area performing arts groups. Oh, yeah, and the big guy in the red suit and Mrs. Claus will be there, too, from 1-6pm, and will be available for photos with children adults and pets!  The Boca Ciega Yacht Club is holding its 25th Annual Lighted Christmas Boat Parade also on Saturday December 11th. Members spend many hours planning and then decorating their boats to share the holiday spirit with the surrounding communities.   This year the parade will begin by entering the Gulfport Municipal Marina at approximately 6:00pm.  It will then travel past the Casino and William’s Pier in Gulfport and into the canals of Town Shores Condominiums.  Be sure to relax after all that shopping at one of the many Downtown restaurants, pubs, and cafes. With over a half mile of shopping, food, fun, and holiday splendor this festive event will soon become a Tampa Bay holiday tradition! Whether you’re a Gulfport resident or a visitor from out of town, there’s plenty to see and do at Gulfport’s Holiday Hoopla Event.

The Gulfport Merchant’s Association gives back to the community all year round. During the Holiday Hoopla event donations will be collected for Operation Santa (New Toys/Gift cards, etc.), The Gulfport Senior Center Foundation (Non perishable food & toiletries) and Get Rescued (Pet Food & Cat litter).  If you are able, please help these organizations in need.  Collection Boxes will be located at the Casino Stage at the intersection of Beach and Shore Boulevards during the event.Prior to the event drop off locations include Gulfport Police Department, Sail Away Realty, Stella’s Deli and The Chamber of Commerce.

Brighten your holidays with a visit to Beach Blvd. in Gulfport at the Holiday Hoopla, on December 11th, 2010 from 10 am to 6 pm!
